Tatsumi PA Car Meet: Access, Best Times and What It's Like Now
How to get to Tatsumi PA in Tokyo, the difference between Tatsumi No.1 and No.2, when JDM cars gather, and whether Tatsumi or Daikoku is the better car-meet stop.
Tatsumi Parking Area is one of the best-known names in Tokyo’s expressway car culture. For years, photographs of GT-Rs, RX-7s, Supras and other modified cars parked above the Tokyo skyline helped turn Tatsumi PA into an international JDM landmark.
Before you go, though, understand one thing: modern Tatsumi is not a smaller version of Daikoku PA. It is much smaller, more transient and less reliable as a car-meet destination.
Tatsumi works best as part of a Tokyo night drive, somewhere you stop while travelling the Shuto Expressway, not somewhere you organise your whole evening around. And there are two Tatsumi parking areas, reached from different directions.

That tiny capacity is why even a modest gathering can fill Tatsumi quickly.
What is Tatsumi PA?
Tatsumi PA is a pair of small parking areas inside Tatsumi Junction on Tokyo’s Shuto Expressway.
The better known is Tatsumi No.1 PA. No.2 serves a different traffic direction. They are not two adjacent car parks you can walk between: which one you can enter depends on your route through the expressway system.
Why is Tatsumi famous among JDM fans?
Its reputation comes from:
- its central Tokyo location;
- the elevated expressways around it;
- the night skyline;
- its connection with Wangan driving culture;
- performance cars stopping there during night drives;
- older photographs showing spectacular urban backdrops.
For Wangan Midnight and Tokyo highway enthusiasts, Tatsumi became almost as recognisable as Daikoku. The atmosphere is different, though. At Daikoku, people often arrive specifically to stay and meet. At Tatsumi, the experience is more often:
arrive → park briefly → meet friends → take photos → continue driving.
Our Daikoku PA vs Tatsumi PA comparison sets the two side by side on cars, atmosphere, photography and access.
When to go
Is there a car meet every night?
No. There is no official Tatsumi car-meet schedule.
Weekend evenings give better odds, but no significant gathering is guaranteed. You might arrive to several interesting cars and find most of them gone twenty minutes later. That is normal.
Best time to visit
Aim for evening into late evening, particularly on Friday and Saturday.
Because Tatsumi is tiny, a busier night can also mean no free spaces or more enforcement pressure. Weeknights can be interesting too, especially later in the evening when ordinary traffic thins out.
No suggested time is an official start time.
Friday vs Saturday
Friday. Potentially a better balance between interesting cars and manageable pressure.
Saturday. Potentially busier, but the tiny capacity becomes a problem quickly.
At Daikoku, another 20 cars can usually fit somewhere. At Tatsumi, another 20 cars can be most of the standard-car capacity.
Is daytime worth it?
You can stop during the day if your route passes through, but we would not make a special daytime trip purely for JDM spotting. The international reputation is about the night-driving scene.
Getting there
Can you take the train to Tatsumi PA?
No. This is a common trap because Tatsumi Station is nearby, but the railway station gives you no pedestrian way into the expressway parking area.
Can you walk to Tatsumi PA?
No. There is no legitimate pedestrian entrance from the surrounding local roads. Do not plan:
- Tatsumi Station and a walk;
- a taxi to a nearby street and a walk;
- crossing local roads beneath the junction.
Being physically close does not give you access.
How do you get there?
You need a vehicle travelling on the Shuto Expressway, and Tatsumi No.1 and No.2 are direction-specific. For a first-time foreign driver:
- set the navigation before moving;
- confirm which PA you want;
- use ETC if available;
- avoid last-second lane changes if you miss the entrance.
If you are hiring a car for the night, our JDM car rental in Tokyo guide covers the fleets and paperwork.
Tatsumi No.1 vs No.2
Most JDM visitors mean Tatsumi No.1 when they just say “Tatsumi PA”.
No.1 has around 29 normal-car spaces and No.2 around 22. Neither comes close to the scale of Daikoku, with its roughly 335 standard-car spaces.
Can you visit without driving yourself?
Yes, if you are riding in a JDM tour, a private tour or a private driver’s vehicle. You do not need to drive. There is just no public-transport or pedestrian way in.
Only one tour listing on this site guarantees a Tatsumi stop: the JDM Car Meet, Autobacs & Daikoku Parking private tour. Its itinerary stops at Tatsumi PA for skyline views before continuing to Daikoku, with A-PIT Autobacs on the way. It has a single review so far and starts from $330, a thin record at a high price, so we would book it only if Tatsumi specifically is the reason you are going.
The Daikoku JDM Car Meet & Night Car Culture Tour (4.8/5 from 714 reviews, from $108) is the better-reviewed option, though not a guaranteed one. Its hosts pick two or three spots on the night from Daikoku, Tatsumi, Umihotaru, A-PIT Autobacs and Gaienmae, and its booking notes say Friday and Saturday night tours skip Daikoku. Our review of this tour covers its options in detail. Treat Tatsumi as a bonus on that tour, and ask the operator before you book if it matters to you.
Should you take a taxi?
We would not make a one-way taxi the main plan, because you need reliable transport out as well as in.
A pre-arranged private driver who stays with you is different, but compare the total cost with a JDM or private tour.
Is Tatsumi good for first-time Tokyo drivers?
It can be, but navigating Tatsumi Junction matters more than the PA itself. If you miss the entrance, carry on safely. No photograph is worth a last-second motorway lane change.
What you’ll see
What cars can you see?
Nothing is guaranteed. Possible sightings include Skyline GT-Rs, R35s, RX-7s, Supras, Silvias, NSXs, Evos, WRXs, modified Toyotas and Nissans, Porsches and supercars.
Tatsumi often rewards timing more than volume.
Is Tatsumi better for JDM cars or supercars?
There is no fixed answer. The Tokyo enthusiast scene is varied, and one small group may include an R34, a Porsche, an RX-7, a BMW M car and a Lamborghini.
Japanese owners are not gathering to put on a JDM-only show for tourists. For places where you can more reliably see a particular car, see the best places to see JDM cars in Tokyo.
Tatsumi or Daikoku?
Tatsumi vs Daikoku: which should you visit?
For a first-time visitor: Daikoku PA, almost every time.
Daikoku has far greater capacity, a stronger chance of a substantial gathering, more tours that go there and more variety at once. Choose Tatsumi if you already have a rental car, are doing a Wangan or Tokyo expressway drive, have already been to Daikoku, or care about the road atmosphere as much as the meet. Our Daikoku PA car meet guide covers the bigger meet in full.
Should you visit both in one night?
If you have a car and the route allows it: yes, potentially. A good night might run:
- Tokyo — start the drive.
- Tatsumi — a short stop.
- Wangan / Tokyo Bay — continue towards Yokohama.
- Daikoku — the main car-meet stop.
- Tokyo — return later.
Our shorthand:
Tatsumi is a stop. Daikoku is the destination.
Is Tatsumi worth a dedicated tour?
Usually, we would not choose a Tatsumi-only tour over a good Daikoku tour.
If a broader JDM tour includes Tatsumi as an extra or alternative stop, great. But if you have one evening and are paying specifically for car-meet access, Daikoku generally offers better odds. Our best Daikoku PA tours from Tokyo comparison sorts those tours by type.
Is Tatsumi worth visiting with a JDM rental?
Yes. This is probably where Tatsumi makes the most sense.
If you have rented an R34, GT-R, Supra or RX-7, Tatsumi becomes one chapter in a wider expressway night instead of the sole destination.
Tatsumi vs Daikoku for an R34 rental
Tatsumi. Good for a quick urban stop, Tokyo expressway atmosphere and photos.
Daikoku. Better for seeing many other cars, spending longer and experiencing the wider meet.
If the route works, go Tatsumi first, then Daikoku.
Photography
What about photography?
Tatsumi became famous partly for its elevated urban backdrop, but be cautious about planning from old photographs.
The site and its sightlines have changed over time, including barriers and other measures introduced in response to nuisance behaviour. Expect modern Tatsumi, not an exact recreation of a decade-old Instagram image.
Is Tatsumi still worth it for photographers?
Yes, if you are already passing through. You can still photograph Japanese cars under urban lighting, among expressway structures and in a real Tokyo night atmosphere.
We would not rent a car solely to reproduce one famous skyline shot.
On the night
How long should you spend there?
Usually 15–30 minutes is plenty for a first stop.
Stay longer if an interesting group is there, but remember this is a tiny working parking area with very limited space.
Can Tatsumi close unexpectedly?
Yes. Expressway PAs can be temporarily closed for construction, emergency maintenance, security or operational reasons. Check current road information if Tatsumi is important to your plan.
Can police clear Tatsumi?
Authorities can intervene when behaviour creates safety, traffic or noise problems. Tatsumi is not a legal street-racing venue.
Does anyone drift at Tatsumi?
That is not something a responsible visitor should expect or encourage. Tatsumi is not a drift circuit, and the Wangan and Shuto network is public road.
If drifting is your goal, look for a legal circuit or a controlled motorsport experience. Our guide to Tokyo Drift and Fast & Furious car experiences explains what the film-themed options include.
Is Tatsumi PA free?
There is no separate admission ticket, but you reach it by a tolled expressway.
Are there toilets and food?
Tatsumi has basic rest-area facilities, much more limited than Daikoku’s. Do not plan it as your dinner stop.
Is Tatsumi safe for tourists?
For a normal visitor arriving legally by vehicle, the main issues are navigation, access and respecting the PA. It does not need to be framed as a dangerous “underground Tokyo” experience.
Tatsumi etiquette
- Do not occupy a space without a vehicle.
- Do not block cars for photos.
- Do not touch cars.
- Do not encourage revving.
- Stay out of active traffic lanes.
- Do not linger for hours just to hold a scarce parking space.
- Do not recreate illegal-driving content.
What if Tatsumi is empty?
Leave. Do not wait two hours hoping a GT-R convoy eventually turns up.
That flexibility is why Tatsumi works best as part of a wider drive.
Is Tatsumi still worth visiting in 2026?
Yes, with realistic expectations.
Go for the Tokyo expressway atmosphere, a small, fast-changing enthusiast stop and the Wangan connection. Do not go expecting hundreds of cars, a guaranteed R34, a scheduled meet, the old unobstructed skyline angles or drifting.
Who should prioritise Tatsumi?
Definitely
- Wangan Midnight fans;
- visitors with a JDM rental;
- people already planning a Tokyo expressway drive;
- returning Tokyo car enthusiasts who have already done Daikoku.
Maybe
- photographers;
- hardcore JDM fans with several car-focused evenings.
Probably not
- first-time tourists with one car-focused evening;
- travellers without a vehicle;
- anyone expecting a huge organised meet.
Best way to experience Tatsumi
- Ride in or rent an interesting JDM car.
- Drive Tokyo’s expressways after dark.
- Stop briefly at Tatsumi.
- Continue along the Wangan and Tokyo Bay.
- Finish at Daikoku PA.
That uses Tatsumi where it is strongest: as part of the journey, not the whole destination. If you want the Wangan run without driving, the JDM Scene Tour with Daikoku PA & Tokyo Tower (4.9/5 from 302 reviews, from $121) leads its highlights with the Wangan highway ride and ends at Daikoku, though it does not stop at Tatsumi. For planning the whole drive yourself, our Japan by car guide for JDM fans covers ETC, tolls and return times.
Our recommendation
If you have never experienced Tokyo’s car scene and can visit only one expressway PA: choose Daikoku.
If you have your own JDM rental or are joining a strong night-driving tour: add Tatsumi.
Daikoku gives you the best chance of experiencing the meet. Tatsumi gives you a taste of the drive.

Frequently asked questions
Can you walk or take the train to Tatsumi PA? No. Tatsumi PA sits inside an expressway junction with no pedestrian entrance, and nearby Tatsumi Station gives no way in. You need to arrive in a vehicle on the Shuto Expressway, whether your own rental, a tour or a private driver.
Is there a car meet at Tatsumi PA every night? No. There is no official schedule. Friday and Saturday evenings give the best odds, but cars tend to stop briefly and move on, and no gathering is guaranteed.
What is the difference between Tatsumi No.1 and No.2 PA? They are two small parking areas inside Tatsumi Junction serving different traffic directions. No.1 has around 29 normal-car spaces and is the one JDM fans usually mean; No.2 has around 22. Which one you can enter depends on your route.
Is Tatsumi PA better than Daikoku PA? Not for a first visit. Daikoku has around 335 standard-car spaces against Tatsumi No.1’s 29, so it is far more likely to have a sizeable gathering. Tatsumi suits a short stop on a wider expressway drive.
How long should you stay at Tatsumi PA? Usually 15 to 30 minutes. It is a small working parking area, so if it is empty or full, move on to Daikoku.
Do any tours go to Tatsumi PA? A few. One private tour on this site guarantees a Tatsumi stop, and one well-reviewed shared tour includes it as one of its rotating stops on some nights. Confirm the current itinerary with the operator if Tatsumi matters to you.
